This is dedicated to all Mothers and Grandmothers of "Special Needs Children" I am and always will be a Mother of a Special Needs child, he now is an adult and I still have him in my care and will as long as I am able. I'm also a Grandmother of a Grandchild with Special Needs . I was given this from a newspaper article written by "Erma Bombeck " when I was about 25 years old. I received this from another Mother of a Special Needs child and had no idea of the road ahead of me and that certainly was a good thing. As it has turned out my son is a "Gift" and Blessing and provides purpose to my life. Most women become Mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social
pressures and a couple by habit, following in the steps of their own
Mothers. This year nearly 100,000 women will become Mothers of
"Special Needs" children. Did you ever wonder how Mothers of Special
Needs children are chosen? Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth
selecting His instruments for propagation with great care and
deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His Angels to make notes in a
giant ledger. Armstrong, Beth, son, Patron Saint Matthew. Forrest,
Marjorie, daughter, Patron Saint Cecilia. Rutledge, Carrie, twins,
Patron...... Give her Gerard. "He's used to profanity." Finally, He passes a
name to an Angel and smiles, "Give her a" Special Needs" child." The
Angel is curious, "Why this one, God? She's so happy." "Exactly," smiles
God. Could I give a"Special Needs" child to a Mother who does not know
laughter? That would be cruel. "But has she patience?"asks the Angel. I
don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self
pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle
it. "I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that
is so rare and so necessary in a Mother. You see, the child I'm going to
give her has his own world. She has to make it live in her world and that's
not going to be easy." "But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you."
God smiles, "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has enough
selfishness." The Angel gasps, "Selfishness? Is that a virtue?" God nods, "If
she can't separate herself from this child occasionally, she'll never survive.
Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child that is less than
perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never
take for granted a "spoken word." She will never consider a "step"
ordinary. When her child says "Momma" for the first time she will be
present at a miracle and know it! When she describes a tree or a sunset to
her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see my creations. I will permit her to see clearly the things I see.... Ignorance, cruelty, prejudice....
and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her
side every minute of every day of her life because she is doing my work as
surely as she is here by my side." "And what about her Patron Saint?" asks the Angel, his pen poised in mid-air. God smiles, A mirror will suffice.

Dear Sweet Marylou...
My friend, my friend. How I needed to read your beautiful blog today. God led you to comment on my little post so I would be SURE to come and read yours as well. It's been a busy day and I've been in and out and I'm so very tired. I wasn't even going to comment on any blogs except for those hosting the Miracle Party...but then there you were~sweetly beckoning me to visit you this very day.
I'm so glad I did.
I'm learning more everyday that our great big world is full of more beautiful people than someone like me can ever hope to comprehend. Your gentle spirit and the spirit of your beloved son shine brightly and it IS because of people like you that life for me is worth living at all.
I want you to know that today you blessed me. The journey that both you and your middle child have been on is MORE than inspiring. It helps me see clearly that each of us has a divine purpose, one that is bigger and greater than we can imagine. What I know in my heart to be true is that what the enemy of our lives hopes will defeat us, with God it only makes us stronger. With Him it is possible to experience true peace and joy in life despite our earthly sorrows and physical afflictions...
I so hope one day when I once again return to my homeland (my beautiful Southern Cali) I will be blessed to meet you face to face. What a day that will be... I pray it will happen.
Love to you~
Rebecca

Oh my goodness, Marilou...
We just never know all the details of a person's journey, do we? We enter Blogland never really realizing the depth of the awesome, talented, courageous, empowering, generous and inspiring souls that we will meet and bring into our lives on a regular basis. I'm blessed to have met you and now I get to meet your son.♥
Thanks so much for posting this personal side of your life.
Happy {PiNk} Day,
Stephanie ♥
PS: Come back and see my newest post. I think you commented at last weeks Pink post. I've got a favorite little story....{not mine personally but it touched my heart years ago when I read it.}
Good Morning Marilou Sweetie...
Miracle Weekend brought me to Spiritual Sunday and as I sat and read your post this morning the tears have flowed. What a beautiful story of a Mother's love. You write so vividly. I can just see your sweet boy rolling down that embankment in his wheelchair. Laughing the whole way down, as Dad was so panicing following to grab. It was probably one of the happies moments in your sons life.
What love, dedication, courage, and inspiration you have given us all today. We never know what another person might be going through. (Sort of like the man who complained he had no shoes, until he met the man who had no legs.)
My Dear Friend I have so enjoyed my visit here today. I will be back again and again. Thank you for sharing your beautiful boy with me today. I feel honored to have met you both.
I tried to add myself as a follower, but for some reason could not get it to work today. I will try again my next visit. Believe me I will be back.
Please stop by Country Wings In Phoenix, my blog. Guideposts magazine is donating a dollar towards our next miracle makeover for each comment left and I want to make enough for several more makeovers. I know they are out there just waiting to be found.
Country hugs sweet friend, Sherry
